Our local paper just did an article on the teens doing a summer job of Detassling. Not sure if you have ever heard of it but it is one of the toughest job on the teens here. I used to raise seed corn and each summer we would have about 10 school buses filled with kids to do the detassling. By the end of 3 weeks we would be down to about 1 bus load left. All the others would quit. What is one of the toughest jobs you have had?

when i was 12 to 14 worked summers and some weekends at a sawmill. shoveling sawdust and stacking lumber. as an adult, hands down working/welding underground coal mines. nothing like riding 45 minutes after going inside to get to work.

Wow sounds like you all worked harder than me ..I clean teeth and it can be a little distasteful, but I'm not in up to my elbows and I didn't have to work in the heat so i guess i can once again count my blessings. Childbirth was a breeze only because they were scheduled Csection's and as far as raising them well the teen's are my favorite years so I enjoyed the roller coaster ride with them...lol Sorry I didn't have some hard life tale to tell...lol Singed Ms.Sunshine and Flowers...lol

Re:Shit birthing was the easy part raising all them children; his, mine and someone elses was the hard part. But they all tell me I did a good job. Even my devil child who has finally settled down at age 26. Took him a longtime to realize mom did know best, LOL. Rose1968Shah write: child birth

Baling hay, breaking a mustang, delivering pigs sheep cows. They always had to deliver on the coldest night in the winter. I was on and off the farms when I was a Kid and first marriage years ago was a 4-h leader for swine and the step daughter was raising sheep FFA. The mustang was mine from a colt adopted thru BLM But to all the MOMs out there that is the toughest CHILDBIRTH. One I was never lucky to experience

Snowplowing on driveways that had cliffs on either side! (but I loved the sound of the diesel truck)

Re: fromthefarm write: Ok an explanation. Detassling - we raised seed corn, a special cross of corn seeds to create what the farmers would plant the next year. We would have 6 rows of the female corn and two rows of male corn. To stop the female corn from pollinating corn they would have the kids pull the tassel off the top of the corn. This weekend I will get out in the farm area and post some pictures of the fields to give you an idea on what it looks like. Kind of a Midwest thing. The hard part is the corn is sometimes 5 to 8 feet tall the tassel is only about the top foot of the corn. Figure a row of corn 1/2 mile long a corn stalk every 4 inches and having to walk through the leaves (very sharp) and pull every tassel out of them. Some times it would be mud or standing water they would have to walk through, at times 100 degrees, no wind down it the corn, the pollen that is there sticks to you like glue. Many of the kids would take a plastic trash bag cut a whole for there head and arms to stick out of just to keep from getting wet from the dew and pollen on the leaves.

damn slut corn! lol : ) toughest job, being a stay home mom when my kids were young.

Wow, some great responses. They all are tough. I think some of the kids now days need to take some of these jobs and figure out how to work. Many of them you have done just to put food on the table for your family. But they built us into what we are today. I have to say truly the hardest of all was being a parent. Either a mother or a father. Raising a good child can be the most challenging and rewarding all within an hour of each other almost every day. May you all have some easier days ahead. Ride safe.

Working EMS in New York city.. ive seen it, patched it, splinted it, injected it, saw it come out, watched it go in, smelt it, dodged it, walked in it, and was hands in it from fingertips to elbow (that last one was a bouncing baby boy).. Definately a life experience.. Now, from the comforts of my home after a career change, i watch it...on Tv!

I am going on a limb here...the hardest job for me was coal mining, I am way too claustrophobic...I last one entire day down there, promised God if he let me live I would NEVER go back. I still hold a valid miners card with UMWA but nooo way. I hurried right on over to mining school. My brother still goes there every day. Just was not my cup of tea, I prefer coffee. LOL Bailing hay was fun for me too I loved working on the farm with my papaw, kept me fit. See I should have stayed on the farm.

The hardest job I ever had was working on a section crew for the Soo Line Railroad. It was the summer after my Junior year of High School.I was 17 lied about my age. We replaced the 12 ft. metal rail with 1/4 mile long metal ribbon. Slept in box cars converted into bunk cars and traveled all over Northern Wisc. and Minn. We worked for 2-3 weeks in an area then they would lay us off and rehire us at the next town. Use to hop freights to get to the next work local. The pay was great for 1973 and being 17 and I never got carded at bars so that part was good.I think that was the last time I was in shape.
