A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.? He then asked, ?Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied ?Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German?. You could have heard a pin drop!

I also actually think if you are gonna occupy and invade a counrty you need to learn from those who were good at it - the Russians. Who took over Checkoslavakia and Hungary over night. and locked down and dominated the country instantly. None of this "freedom" and "liberty". You ahve just invaded a country, bombed its people, removed its govt, disintegrated the internal structure. You don't start giving liberty and freedom to people you have just pssd off. You have to have a hand as hard and tough as iron till you get security and stability. When things "kick off" on ward and its chaos and volatile and dangerous I don't do the understanding and empathy. I do tough and lock down and be as tight as a fishes a$$ - and that's water tight. Til its all stable and calmed down. You know it works - You know it make sense. Don't trust human nature - its 'orrible. And the more freedom you give it the more 'orrible it gets. XXXjunie

GOD!!!Demo gets poltical - I suggest you take a drink and sit down til the feeling goes away. There, There. Feel better now. I have a theory that politcal leaders who don't have a good and regular sex life have an urge to launch missles. ie: Reagan and his missus who lookd like she'd sucked on a lemon for last two years. You could not bounce on those chicken bones. Bush - christian - has sex but not as anyone esle knows it. Not exciting for eirhter of them. Like going to bed with Pa Walton. Hitler - abstained celibate. Obviously had some problems. Ossama - again I would think sx is very basic and there is no rock n roll in that bed. A lot of war mongering dictators are little men who would not cut it on a building site - say no more. Unfortuantely America can do without the rest of the world which is "far away" and "over there" that makes some of your decisions frightening as we have to live with them. There are no friends in politics. But you must believe in the little man and the power of the community which will still be here and still looking after itself and each other well after the polticians are dead. The power of the community is more powerful than any man. UP THE REVOLUTION. We are long overdue a peasants revolt. Viva La Guilotine (feminine verb in French) I'll get my knitting needls out. Junie

Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallon s of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?" Once again, dead silence.

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of 'empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying,"Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return." It became very quiet in the room.

Re: demoman write: hahaha good old Churchill. he had many good quotes Junie i agree to a point, we are lazy here, but the only reason i see any need to learn another language would be if i was going to another country. hell i don't think our kids are being taught English as fast as Spanish, and i think thats wrong. good question cachorra

Its just one of those things. Says that if a child learns another language when young, they find it easier to learn other languages later. Tried year two school French but no one could understand a word I said although I was top in class. Explained that we are taught perfect French and like English no one speaks it. But everyone has been very nice and spoke English whereever I've been. But nice to return the complement and consideration. Good at international sign language and frantic arm movements. Just had a wink from a Anglo/Franco so best start practising. junie

That's a good one. But then we are lazy. Foreign languages is compulsory in other countries. Most european children are multilingual. Much more versatile; junie
