OH, man, I can't believe the police would escort a ride and then hand out tickets for excessive noise. I went on several sponsored rides last summer, the best ones in Kentucky are the Blue Knights rides, you have to be full time or retired law enforcement to be a member, but anyone can go on their rides. Police escort the whole way, a good meal and a T-shirt, 300 or more bikes, just a good ride. The attitude here is that loud pipes save lives.
Be wary of sponsored rides with police escorts or involvement as well.
A ride in Colorado Springs was escorted or accompanied by Police who at the close of the ride handed out tickets to those with loud pipes. It is good legal business.
Respect is important. To avoid more legislation choose carefully where and how often you rap it.
Always there will be the percentage that having nothing better to do than complain, but try not to increase complaining numbers through inconsideration of your neighbor.

Do you know if there will be fines for excessive noise too with the epa ruling? I dont and wont rip and tear just to hear my bike, I just wanted a little more growl. thanks ed and happy valentines day everyone
it really depends on the area you live in and the amount of tolerance the police in your area have as far as what pipes they will allow you to run. if you notice on my bike my pipes are extremely short so it's obvious that i have no baffles, but i have never been ticketed for them...some of my buddies have been. the screaming eagle pipes should be fine. they are louder but still are baffled enough to meet most requirements. just don't hammer on the throttle around the law.

Good advice Stillme!
I know I will be keeping my ole carbs until they die.
Who says carbs are bad for you.
It is interesting as far as emissions that motorcycles that do 45+ mpg would be attacked earlier than SUV.
The VROD only gets 35mpg compared to my air cooled motors.
We all need to do something about the environment and emissions. I think those who ride their motorcycles consistently for commuting as well as for pleasure have already done a great deal more than those riding solo in a car on the way to work.
We promote in the world what we do not have at home; FREEDOM.

On a related note, Harley has announced plans to discontinue its' Screamin' Eagle line of slip-on mufflers on May 31st of this year because of this EPA ruling.
harley is changing a lot of things because of this ruling... no carbuerated bikes... all fuel injected ...motors will become more like the v-rod. and don't be fooled, harley had a lot to do with this crap passing. they put up no fight to this because they are losing such a huge chunk of the custom market to the explosion of new comers. they know that it will kill off a lot of the small shops because they dont have the cash flow to go thru the EPA certification processes. harley can kiss my brown eye for all i care.
but to those of you that already have your harley or custom sled...good news... you are exempt. and if you are thinking of selling a bike, hang on to it for a bit. because their values will start to pick up because the are exempt.
